There has been a backlash from designers all over the blogosphere about the new iTunes logo, and it’s easy to see why. Although the old cd and musical notes seems outdated since cds have gone out of use and digital is the preferred format of music consumption these days, the new iTunes button is generic and a throwback to web 2.0 design.
It’s like it was done by someone who just learned to apply effects in Photoshop. There’s a drop shadow, a glow, in-your-face gradient, AND a gloss effect. Whatever happened to simplicity in design?
Apple’s philosophy in the past been to deliver beautiful, clean design. Maybe this is their way of signaling they’ll start following a new design direction . If this is indeed that indication, then we are witnessing the beginning of the end in the company’s long stretch of great design.
